Exploring Slavery and Black Identity: Analysis of Colson Whitehead's " The Underground railroad"


The research paper highlights how black people have been dehumanized and marginalized
under slavery by their white masters. They have been tortured and oppressed under draconian
laws and policies. It has left indelible scars on their psyches. Colson Whitehead, in his Novel The
Underground Railroad highlights the oppression and inhuman acts the blacks have confronted
under their white masters who demolished their identity. These people have been incarcerated
under vicious laws. The blacks have been discriminated against based on their skin colour and
genealogy. This has haunted their psyches. Their black identity is distorted under slavery by
their white masters. These people have been disremembered and unaccounted for in history as
well. There were no records about these people as their records had been destroyed by their
white masters. The paper will study the impact of slavery and its repercussions on black people.
